slice of life

bookmaking, writing, design & illustration

A collection of entries and essays based on figures of speech about food. Written and designed following the format of a cookbook, Slice of Life is a love letter to the things I savour the most. Printed with a combination of digital and risograph printing, the book was handbound and exhibited as a capstone project at the 2024 RMIT Graduate Exhibit.

This work is currently in progress to be published under Sandwich Press.

EXCERPTS

It goes without saying that some people’s salt is more valuable than others’, especially in certain situations. My dad always told me he always raised us with the hope that we’d hear his voice in our heads even without him around. You’d think that would take a fair bit of salt, and for that salt to be worth its salt. But over time, it has happened. I go through life and I meet people and I make choices all with salt I’ve preemptively taken from my dad before he knows what’s even happened.

Taken with a Grain of Salt

I recently told a friend that, if life gives us lemons, loving my boyfriend is lemon curd. All those lemons, sweetened and refined into a silky smooth spread. I think I savour it especially because of all those quiet, fragrant lemons I came across before him. I think life gives us lemons in people and that we hand lemons out to others, in a zesty, citrusy dance.
